The situation you’re in

Two hard choices. Until now.

Here’s what most people don’t realise. Whether you use a solicitor or do it yourself, you gather the same estate information either way. A solicitor doesn’t find it for you. So the real question was never who collects the details. It’s who does the difficult technical part once the details are in. With YouCanDoProbate, that’s us.
Option 1

Pay a solicitor

Often £1,500 to £10,000 or more, sometimes a percentage of the estate on top. You still gather all the details yourself.

Feels like the safe choice. But people are regularly quoted between £1,500 and £10,000 or more, and some solicitors take 1 to 4 percent of the estate value on top. You still have to provide all the information yourself.
Fees of 1 to 3 percent of the estate value
Sometimes a share of the estate on top
You still provide all the information
Slow, little visibility, hidden costs
Option 2

Go it alone via GOV.UK

The forms are free, but there’s no guidance. It’s easy to pick the wrong forms or miss valuable exemptions.

The forms are free, but they assume you already understand the process. You’re left to figure out everything alone.

Good to know

The question was never who collects the details

Here’s something most people don’t realise until they’re already a solicitor deep. Whether you use a solicitor or do it yourself, you still have to gather the same information about the estate. A solicitor doesn’t find it for you.
As one of our customers put it: “Having spoken to friends who had lost parents recently, they said all the information they had to provide to a solicitor was the same as I simply had to tap in. They paid the thousands I had been quoted.”
So the real question was never who collects the details. It’s who does the difficult technical part once the details are in. With YouCanDoProbate, that’s us.
Probably saved us £10k in solicitors fees. I had one query and somebody called me within 30 minutes and explained everything simply.

Our story

Built by someone who faced exactly what you’re facing

YouCanDoProbate was created after our co-founder, a Chartered Accountant and software developer, had to apply for probate following his father’s death. Even with a financial background, he was shocked by how complicated and unclear the process was. He saw people paying solicitors thousands of pounds, or spending stressful months trying to manage it alone, never quite sure they’d got it right.
He looked for an affordable middle ground. There wasn’t one. So he set out to build what didn’t exist: an accurate, affordable platform that helps people complete probate properly, at their own pace, with expert support always close at hand.
Today, YouCanDoProbate is accredited for compliance by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and rated 4.9 Excellent on Trustpilot.
“Solicitors and banks have charged too much, for too little, for too long.”

Common questions

Still have questions?

Here are the questions we hear most often. If yours isn’t answered here, our team is always happy to help, no obligation.
What’s the difference between this and doing it myself on the government website?
The government forms are free, but you’re left to understand the process, work out the calculations, apply the right exemptions, and choose the correct forms yourself. That’s where mistakes happen. YouCanDoProbate does all of that for you and gives you expert support along the way, so you can be confident it’s right.
How long does probate take?
Most of our customers receive their Grant of Probate within 3 to 6 weeks of posting their completed application. Processing times are set by HMCTS, not us, but submitting a complete and accurate application reduces the risk of delays.
Do I need any prior probate knowledge?
No. The platform is designed for people with no probate experience at all. It guides you through each step and does the calculations and form-filling for you.
What does it cost?
You pay one fixed price of £499 inc. VAT, with no hidden extras and no percentage of the estate. The only additional cost is the official Probate Registry fee of £526 for estates over £5,000, plus £2 per additional official copy, paid directly to HM Courts and Tribunals Service.
What support is available?
Unlimited support by phone, email, live chat, and support ticket from our UK-based experts. There’s also an integrated guidance section with written information and video instructions, available throughout the entire process.
Does it work if there is no Will?
Yes. The platform works whether there is a Will or not.
Can I stop and come back later?
Yes. Your progress is saved automatically, so you can work at your own pace and return whenever it suits you. There’s no time limit.
What if I’m not confident with computers?
The platform is built to be simple and intuitive, with clear instructions at every step. And if you get stuck, our UK-based team is only a call, email, or message away.
Is this a law firm?
No. YouCanDoProbate is an online platform that provides legal forms and guidance. It is not a substitute for legal advice on complex estate matters. If your estate involves unusual legal complexity, please speak to our team before you start.

A simpler, safer way to get probate done

You don’t have to pay high solicitor fees, and you don’t have to face probate alone, to get it right. Enter your details once, and YouCanDoProbate handles the calculations, the forms, and the tax, with expert support whenever you need it. Most of our customers receive their Grant of Probate within 3 to 6 weeks of posting.
There’s no rush. You can work at your own pace. But whenever you’re ready to begin, we’ll be here.
