You have to supply a solicitor with the information anyway, so why not do it yourself for a fraction of the cost?

The only additional cost is the official £526 Probate Registry fee for estates over £5,000, paid directly to HMCTS. Compare that to thousands in solicitor fees, for a process you would still have to help with anyway.
Complete transparency

The only additional official costs

We believe in being completely upfront, so there are no surprises. Beyond the £499 platform fee, the only other costs are official government fees paid directly to HM Courts and Tribunals Service. Not to us.

Probate Registry fee

£526, for all estates valued over £5,000. No fee for estates of £5,000 or under.

Additional official copies

£2 per copy, if you need extra sealed copies of the Grant to send to banks, the Land Registry, and other organisations at the same time.
These are paid by cheque or postal order, enclosed with your application forms. These are the same costs you would pay regardless of which route you chose, whether that’s YouCanDoProbate, a solicitor, or applying via GOV.UK. They are a government fee, not ours, and they apply to everyone applying for probate in England and Wales.
A fair question

If you’re wondering whether a £499 platform can really replace a solicitor

This is a fair and sensible question. We’d rather address it directly than hope it doesn’t come up.
The honest answer is: for most estates, yes. A solicitor’s technical work on a typical probate estate involves calculating the estate value, applying exemptions, determining any inheritance tax, selecting the correct forms, and completing them accurately. YouCanDoProbate does exactly that, automatically, from the answers you enter. The platform has been built by a Chartered Accountant with deep probate expertise and is accredited by the ICAEW.
The platform is not the right choice for estates involving unusual legal complexity, trusts, contested Wills, overseas assets, or certain specialist reliefs. For those, we’ll always say so honestly. But for most estates, including those with inheritance tax, you don’t need to pay thousands to get this done properly.
Genuinely good value

What you’d pay a solicitor for the same result

A solicitor does the technical work, but the price is high. People are regularly quoted between £1,500 and £10,000 or more for a straightforward estate. Some solicitors and banks take a percentage of the estate on top, sometimes 1 to 4 percent. On a £300,000 estate, that’s £3,000 to £12,000. On a larger estate, it can reach £20,000 or more. And in every case, you still have to gather all the estate information yourself.
And here’s the part most people don’t realise until they’re already partway through. You still have to gather the same information yourself, regardless. A solicitor doesn’t find the estate details for you. You’re the one tracking down the bank statements, the property values, the gift records. You collect it all and then hand it over.
So the real question is: who does the difficult technical part once the details are in? With YouCanDoProbate, that’s us. For one fixed fee. Compare that to thousands in solicitor fees, for a process you’d still have to help with anyway.
“I had been quoted £5,000 to £7,000 for a solicitor to do my mum’s probate. It was very easy. When I did have a query, I sent through the question and it was answered really quickly.”
