The estate calculation and inheritance tax assessment are the most technically demanding parts of any probate application. This article explains how the YouCanDoProbate platform handles them.

The calculation process

As you enter information through the platform walkthrough, the system builds the calculation in the background. By the time all sections are complete, it has:

  • Totalled all assets and deducted all liabilities to reach the net estate value
  • Identified which gifts are taxable and which fall within an exemption
  • Applied all applicable IHT allowances including NRB, RNRB, TNRB, and TRNRB correctly and in the right order
  • Determined whether IHT is due and the exact amount
  • Selected the correct IHT400 supplementary schedules and populated every section

What you do not need to understand

You do not need to know the IHT rates, the conditions attached to the RNRB, how taper relief works, or which supplementary schedules exist. The platform handles all of this from your answers.

Independent verification

YouCanDoProbate holds ICAEW Technology Accreditation. Its calculations and form outputs have been independently assessed by RSM on behalf of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and confirmed to be accurate and compliant.

What the platform produces
