  • Full legal name, date of birth, and date and place of death
  • Last permanent address and postcode
  • Domicile (in most cases, England or Wales)
  • National Insurance number

Estate assets

  • Bank accounts: institution name, account number, and balance at the date of death (written confirmation from each bank)
  • ISAs and savings: closing balance at the date of death
  • Investments: date-of-death valuation from each platform or registrar
  • Property: open market value at the date of death (estate agent’s letter or RICS report)
  • Life insurance not written in trust: sum assured
  • Pension funds: confirmation of any death benefit forming part of the estate
  • Personal possessions: a reasonable valuation of vehicles, jewellery, antiques, and other items of value

Gifts and liabilities

  • Details of any gifts made in the seven years before death: what was given, to whom, when, and the value
  • Outstanding mortgage balance at the date of death
  • Credit card and loan balances, utility bills, and other outstanding debts
  • Funeral costs
